Team ICON - 'The Old Gang'

Description

My team of OC's. Might write a full story for them one day!

Colour Reference - Gold. An Icon is a gold portrait depicting a religious figure painted using gold paint or gold leaf, and often presented in a solid gold case. The team was originally named Team IRON, but due to unfortunate circumstances was renamed when Carter was added to the team.

Io (Iolanthe) Ilyushin

Eyes – Violet.

Voice – Gentle Eastern European accent.

Height – 5 ft 9 in (not including ears).

Personality – Confident and mature, yet understatedly street-smart.

Weapon – Tears of Shesenya. An Ilyushin family heirloom traditionally given to the eldest daughter, the Tears are a set of five lightning dust-infused stone weights that are worn around the wrists and ankles, with the final weight worn in a braid and used for devastating spinning attacks. The weights amplify the power of Io's kick and punches, but have no ranged attack.

Semblance – Springheel. Io can draw power from the earth through the soles of her feet and into her legs, allowing her to jump incredibly high and kick with tremendous power. Her skin must be in direct contact with the surface she is jumping from for the semblance to activate, so she only wears shoes for formal occasions. There also must be a direct conduit to the earth for the semblance to activate, so she cannot springheel whilst using air transport.

Weakness – No long range offence whatsoever, although her semblence gets her quickly into the action. Cannot use her semblance whilst in the air.

Predominant Colours – Purples and whites

Likes – Training, good company, live music (she liked to introduce Carter and Opal to bands that they had never heard of – her favourites were The Prevention, Reverb & the Haregirls and Smile Brigade).

Dislikes – Mint flavour, cheesy pop music.

Background – Io hails from Vacuo, the eldest daughter of five, although she has an elder brother, Helios. Her father had disappeared after the birth of her youngest sister (Io was seven) but her mother pushed her hard to escape the poverty of Vacuo, and she won a scholarship at Atlas. Io was gifted with the Tears of Shesenya by her mother, who had hidden them from her alcoholic husband.

Although, as a hare faunus, Io met a great deal of intolerance among the citizens of Atlas, her ready smile and determination won her a sizable following at combat school, with many young warriors impressed that her archaic weaponry could match and even best their own technologically-advanced Atlasian equipment. Io had mastered her semblance early, spending much of her childhood leaping across the rooftops of Vacuo in search of food to steal (or escaping the authorities). In combat, her opponents found this well-honed ability very difficult to counter.

She graduated easily into Atlas Academy and was made leader of Team IRON, along with Rosemary Coote-Hampton, Opal de Havilland and Navajo Grumman. However, Rosemary, a young aristocrat, resented Io's position, particularly as Io was a faunus. Io was surprised but delighted when the seemingly rather aloof Opal came to her aid, repeatedly requesting that Rosemary be expelled for her behaviour, or at the very least transferred to another team. Eventually, Rosemary was replaced with Carter Wulf, whom Io had previously become acquainted with due to his attachment to Opal (and disinterest in his own team).

Opal's positivity towards faunus-kind despite her own aristocratic upbringing stirred something within Io, and she silently harboured romantic feelings for her teammate throughout their time at the Academy. She found a natural affinity towards the easygoing Nav Grumman who had worked alongside faunus in the mines of Mantle and had something of a hard life himself. The pair enjoyed nothing more than sneaking from the Academy grounds at night, sometimes dragging a protesting Opal and Carter along, to visit sleazy bars and enjoy live music in the more disreputable areas of the city.

(Cyrill) Carter Wulf

Eyes – Cyan blue.

Voice – Light, clear British English.

Height – 6 ft 2 in.

Personality - Cheerful and calm, although he is rather oblivious to emotional cues. He is very self conscious about his real first name (Cyrill - his mother loved the colour cerulean) but apart from this nothing usually phases him.

Weapon – Vulcan Heart, a slab-like sword with a large revolver cylinder and a long handle. The handle and blade length shorten for transportation. In this smaller form, it can be used as a mace and can be thrown like a re-usable fragmentation grenade, forcefully expelling all of its shotgun pellets.

Semblance – Carter can sense his opponent's immediate intentions during combat. This allows him to easily dodge attacks and, as such, he rarely lifts his blade until he has seen all that his opponent has to offer. Then he will strike.

Weakness – Area-of-effect attacks (a two-second head start might not be enough to move out of a blast radius!), very fast opponents (just because he can see a flurry of attacks coming does not necessarily mean that he can dodge them all in time, although he is very fast himself) and opponents with high levels of stamina who can wear him down.

Predominant Colours – Blue-greys and light blues.

Likes – Cleanliness, tea, serving tea.

Dislikes – His real first name, bugs.

Background – Carter's father, Rivers, was butler and bodyguard to Opal and her family. Growing up alongside Opal (albeit 'below stairs'), Carter himself was trained to defend her and the de Havilland family from a very young age.

When Opal made it clear that she was to become a huntress, her father insisted that Carter accompany her once she had completed her combat schooling. Carter did not join Opal at combat school, instead learning his skills from his father. Despite possessing no formal combat qualifications, he impressed the Atlas selection committee with his practical knowledge of martial arts and defensive strategy.

However, the selection process was not kind to Carter, and he and Opal were separated. He was placed in Team OCHR with Oxley Whimbrel, Hansa Crake and Rosso Ibys. Carter found his three teammates to be loud and insensitive, although they were very capable fighters. He spent virtually no time with them outside of training, preferring to seek out Opal. Through her, he met Io. He also had the misfortune of seeing rather a lot of Rosemary, who enjoyed flirting with the all-male Team OCHR, quickly forming a rather noisy relationship with team leader Oxley. Fortunately for Carter, Opal's Team IRON were suffering from Rosemary's dislike of faunus-kind, and Carter, Opal and Io were able to convince the academy to transfer Carter to Team IRON (becoming Team ICON), and Rosemary to Team OCHR.

At Atlas, Carter grew closer to Opal than ever before (although he found it difficult to avoid calling her “Miss” at first) and he soon saw through her rather haughty and aristocratic demeanour, discovering a sensitive but resolute girl beneath. He also began a friendly rivalry with team-mate Navajo Grumman, and the two kept score of one another's kill count and regularly teased one another. Although Grumman's rough-and-ready temperament offset Carter's polite and calm demeanour, the two quickly became very close friends. But of all the accomplished warriors at Atlas, Carter looked up to team-leader Io Ilyushin most of all. Her easygoing nature, cool head and skill in battle made a deep impression upon Carter, and he became a devoted team-mate to her. Sadly, Opal often misinterpreted Carter's devotion to Io as a romantic interest.

In their second year at Atlas Academy, Carter was picked to represent Team ICON in the singles round of the Vytal Festival. However, he was disqualified due to 'intentional inactivity', as he spent almost thirty minutes calmly dodging his opponent’s attacks whilst refusing to engage himself. He claims that this was unfair, as he was merely using his semblance to understand his opponent's method of attack before making his move. The match was widely regarded as one of the most boring matches in Vytal Festival history.

Opal de Havilland

Eyes – Opal green.

Voice – Clipped British English.

Height – 5 ft 3 in.

Personality – Polite but has an aristocratic, sassy streak and can sometimes appear aloof and reserved.

Weapon – Dread Celeste, a combination of glaive and artillery pistol. It can only fire one shot before a reload, but at the press of a button, Opal can extend its bipod legs and lengthen the barrel to create a mobile artillery platform of great power. The blade can also extend, creating an elegant glaive.

Semblance – Deadeye. Opal can draw power from her aura to track a target and can perform seemingly impossible shots. She can, for example, hit a target that that is behind cover by bouncing a shell from Dread Celeste around the terrain until it hits its target.

Weakness – Vulnerable whilst taking her shot. Slow reload. Tracking a target depletes her aura.

Predominant Colours – Dark blues and gold with an offset of wine red.

Likes – Being right, music, small dogs.

Dislikes – Being wrong, being late, silence.

Background – Opal is an only child from an aristocratic background. Although she could simply inherit her wealth, she became enamoured of Atlas' huntresses after a particular event during her childhood.

Her father was something of a sycophant to the Schnee family and, eager to integrate his daughter into Jacques Schnee's prestigious circle of friends and partners, he allowed her to accompany them on her first recreational hunting trip at Schnee's invitation. The party had difficulty tracking their prey, a large Boarbatusk skulking at the edge of the pine forests. Opal was the first to spot it, little more than a bone-white sliver visible between two large trees - her semblance, dormant until now, immediately activated and, in less than a heartbeat, she had instinctively grabbed her father's rifle and fired. She hit her target, but the sudden movement and noise startled her horse and the poor creature bolted, Opal caught in the reigns. Eventually, she broke free and fell from her mount, finding herself far from the hunting party and deep in the cold Atlas pine woods. Grimm, sensing her fear, soon began to circle. However, Opal was in luck, for a faunus huntsman had been tracking the Grimm and quickly dispatched the monsters. Opal could only watch, awestruck. From then on, she knew her destiny lay at Atlas Academy.

The pair were discovered by Carter, who was distraught that he had failed to protect Opal himself. Opal could not help but notice Schnee's disapproval of the faunus huntsman (to him, faunus are labourers and little more), and Opal lost her temper with him when he called her saviour an “animal fit only for the pickaxe and the drill”. Her outburst brought the relationship between the Schnees and de Havillands to an abrupt end, despite her father's stammering apologies for his daughter's actions.

Although her father was initially very much against the idea of his only child following her new-found dream, which he knew would lead her on a dangerous path, his wife, who was very proud that Opal wanted to take agency of her own life rather than rely upon the family wealth, persuaded him to send Opal to military school in preparation for Atlas Academy.

Opal flourished at combat school and, at the age of seventeen, was admitted into Atlas Academy. Initially she was separated from Carter and placed in Team IRON, with team leader Io Ilyushin, Rosemary Coote-Hampton and Navajo Grumman. However, tensions soon arose between Io and Rosemary, the latter harbouring judgemental views against faunus, particularly as Io was team leader, a position the well-heeled Rosemary believed was unfit for faunus-kind. Seeing as Carter was also struggling in Team OCHR, Atlas staff acceded to Opal and Io's request and allowed Carter to change positions with Rosemary. Team ICON and Team OCHR maintained a constant rivalry ever since.

During her four years at Atlas, Opal found something of a soul mate in Carter whom she had always treated more as a servant than a friend until their time together at the Academy, and slowly generated romantic feelings for him. However, he barely registered her affection and it was not until the battle that wiped out half of Team ICON that she found the courage to make her feelings clear. However, she discovered that those feelings were reciprocated.

Navajo “Nav” Grumman

Eyes – His right eye is pale yellow, the left is a prosthetic with a metal iris.

Voice – Gruff American.

Height - 5 ft 8 in.

Personality – Usually very (maybe too) laid back, but harbours a deep competitive streak. He is quite popular with young women.

Weapon – Poppy, a large wrench and multi-tool with a blowtorch that Grumman can use as a flamethrower. Grumman has also created various oil-based dust concoctions that he can load into Poppy for a variety of elemental effects. The wrench can extend and retract for easier carrying capability.

Semblance – Navajo can summon thick metal barriers from the ground to protect him and his team. These barriers become more brittle over time, so the cover they provide is only temporary.

Weakness – Can be overconfident, and has a tendency to rush into battles everyone else knows he cannot win.

Predominant Colours – Greys and yellow.

Likes – Winning, attractive women, fixing things, breaking things.

Dislikes – Losing to Carter (or anyone, but mainly Carter).

Background – Navajo was born in Mantle, the son of an engineering overseer in one of the Schnee dust mines. He spent his formative years learning his engineering skills from his parents and helped to protect the miners from Grimm living in interconnecting tunnels and abandoned mine shafts. When he was twelve, he lost his left eye to a large pack of Grimm which had been terrorising the workers in a particularly deep mine shaft. His parents saved his life and destroyed the Grimm, but many miners had already been killed by the monsters. The incident drove the young engineer to become a stronger and more capable fighter.

Answering a call by the Atlasian Military to recruit combat engineers, Navajo enlisted and began his training. With his skill as an engineer as well as a fighter, he impressed the Atlas Acedemy's selection committee and was admitted into the school at the age of seventeen. Having always enjoyed female company, he was delighted to be the only male member of Team IRON, sharing a dorm with three attractive young women.

He was initially rather resentful of Carter for replacing Rosemary in the team (as the male-female ratio was now 50-50), but was impressed by Carter's skill in combat and quickly formed an intense (but friendly) rivalry with him. Navajo enjoyed teasing Carter and Opal, finding them rather naive due to their well-to-do backgrounds, whereas he and Io came from somewhat rougher stock. He became extremely close to Io (although their relationship remained purely platonic – Navajo found the idea of a long-term girlfriend somewhat tiresome anyway) as he had always enjoyed working alongside faunus in the mines and found comfort in her company. The two enjoyed sneaking away from the Academy grounds at night and into seedy clubs, a habit that cost them top grades (next-morning classes were a write-off), much to Opal and Carter's annoyance.

Not bad! Not bad at all.

Sorry if this seems intrusive, but are you doing team banner commissions?
